Old Jaffa's Dream

Jaffa is mutating rapidly. On the edge of the ultra-modern city of Tel Aviv, certain areas offer a form of resistance : to time, to history, to the West, to fatality.

Ambling amidst the streets where marginal people live alongside the traditional populations, I came across these former dwellings, with their punctured roofs and cracked walls, but whose dignity remained intact. Deserted in 1948 by their arab owners after the creation of the State of Israël, they have been saved from destruction due to the right of ownership and the right of return…

Uncared for, ghostlike, they symbolise this tragic moment of History, when ruptures block continuity. The instant after, they disintegrate, allowing the elements to penetrate, restoring their dust to the earth. An ultimate show of exploding colors, unexpected labyrinths and new horizons…
